Goodland, Kansas is a community on the northwestern side of Kansas. Our major thoroughfares are Interstate 70 that runs East-West and US Hwy 27 that runs North-South. Just 17 short miles to our west is the Colorado state line and approximately 44 miles to the north is the Nebraska state line. The City of Goodland was incorporated as a city of the third class on September 5, 1887. The founding and incorporation of the city of Goodland was the outgrowth of a bitter rivalry between a number of pioneer towns, all located within a few miles of each other, and near the present site of Goodland. In a special election, Goodland was overwhelmingly selected as the county seat of Sherman County. Goodland is the primary retail trade center for northwest Kansas, southern Nebraska and eastern Colorado, and contains an approximate 40,000-trade population within an eighty-mile radius. Goodland has a population of 4,948 according to the 2000 census. Sherman county has a total population of 6,760. The local economy has transformed in the past few years due to growth in the sunflower market. Goodland is one of only two marketing centers for sunflowers in the United States and Sherman County is the largest producer of commercial sunflowers on the High Plains. Goodland is the official “Sunflower Capital of the Sunflower State”. Vegetable oil from oil sunflowers and edible seeds from the confectionary sunflowers are grown here. The sunflower processing is the area’s largest industry. Do you know the difference between the two types of sunflowers? We invite you to come and find out! There is tons to do in Sherman County and in Goodland, Kansas! We would love for you to make a trip here and stay a night… or stay a lifetime! |

Goodland offers several hunting opportunities for the avid outdoorsman. Among others, one of the most popular sports that this part of the country offers is upland game bird hunting. Even though the pheasant is not indigenous to the United States, they heavily populate our northwest Kansas area. There are also outfitters that offer a controlled hunting area that offer a pheasant, chucker and quail hunting experience of a lifetime. The northwest Kansas area is also popular for deer hunting as we have both Mule Deer and Whitetail here. Turkey hunting is equally popular and there are a few water holes in the surrounding areas that folks like to throw a line in with the hopes of bringing home dinner! |

Sherman County and Goodland are rich in history and culture. Goodland has its own Art Center that is chock full of beautiful crafts and products made by our local artisans and Sherman County has its own historical society with several tours to enjoy. Please feel free to click on the pictures and logos to the right and be taken to the various sites. We hope you enjoy it enough to come and see it in person! And of course, make the decision to stay a night... The Big Easel Project began in 1996 when an artist and teacher, Cameron Cross, decided to contribute a work of art to the city in which he was teaching, Altona, Canada. Cross decided an enlarged hand painted reproduction of one of Vincent van Gogh's sunflower paintings, a public domain painting, resting on an enormous easel would make an appropriate landmark for the city. Did you know Goodland is home to the first ever patent helicopter? WE ARE!!! Not only can you see it, you can also imagine you were there by turning on the motor which in turn rotates the propellers. Be sure to visit The High Plains Museum. (Find more information on the museum on the Convention & Visitor’s Bureau site by clicking on the sunflower painting to the right.) |
